Solar power has become the leading renewable energy source due to its wide availability and favourable environmental effects. As the solar sector expands, the demand for effective maintenance and inspection procedures rises. Drones have evolved to play a crucial part in this.

With their capacity to collect solar energy, these drones provide a new and environmentally friendly method of improving solar energy systems.

Solar-powered drones date back to the 1970s when the first solar-powered aircraft completed a flight. Substantial developments have since paved the way for this technology. Prominent advances include NASA's establishment of the first solar-powered drone in 1997 and the introduction of lightweight materials and cutting-edge energy efficiency techniques.

Solar-powered drones with cameras have revolutionized the way solar panels are maintained. Technicians perform these operations manually, which takes time and resources. Integrating solar panels onto drone platforms has made it possible to mechanize these procedures, making them quicker and less expensive.

Advantages of Solar-Powered Drones

• Solar-powered drones use sustainable energy. They have solar panels built into their frames and can recharge their batteries in direct sunlight, negating the requirement for additional power sources. This feature allows them to fly longer, increasing their autonomy and guaranteeing effective inspection and upkeep work without depleting fossil fuel supplies.

• Solar-powered drones, with superior cameras and thermal imaging sensors, can cover huge areas, take pictures, and identify abnormalities. They undertake aerial inspections and spot any problems that could impact energy output. Early identification decreases the possibility of extended outages and allows prompt maintenance.

• Solar-powered drones minimize the need for human intervention in inaccessible locations. Technicians may find it difficult to do solar installations since they often need to operate at high heights or in hard terrain. Drone use advances worker safety and lowers expenses by disregarding the need for manual inspections in dangerous areas.

• As tech develops, solar-powered drones will play a bigger role in maintaining and extending solar installations, supporting the development and sustainability of the renewable energy industry.

Solar-Powered Drones in Expanding Logistics and E-Commerce Industry

Solar-powered drones are helpful in various drone services like logistics and delivery sectors, including medical supplies and e-commerce. It can carry medical supplies to remote locations with sustainability and independence of its operation on any fuel or charging infra. Throughout emergencies, a solar-powered drone can independently be sent with no fuel infra to allow emergency response within healthcare facilities with improved healthcare access and quality.

According to the International Trade Administration, B2B e-commerce sales have increased in the past decade and will reach USD 36 trillion by 2026. Alternatively, global B2C e-commerce revenue will reach USD 5.5 trillion by 2034, with a CAGR of 14.4%. In this e-commerce sector, drones offer dependable last-mile delivery solutions that can overcome traffic congestion and logistical bottlenecks in urban and rural areas.

Solar energy provides prolonged flight capabilities, decreasing operational costs and carbon emissions. This aligns with the rising demand for eco-friendly delivery systems, bridging gaps in supply chains while supporting global sustainability.

Solar-powered drones can also be used in the entertainment industry for cinematography and event coverage. They can revolutionize aerial cinematography by offering extended flights to capture spectacular shots in remote locations and plummeting logistical challenges, such as frequent battery changes.

This benefits movies, documentaries, and ads requiring seamless visual storytelling in outdoor settings. Furthermore, these drones can also improve event coverage through incessant aerial perspectives for sports events or concerts. The sustainability of their operations without the limitation of battery use guarantees constant and superior video, consistent with the growing emphasis of the media industry on ecological and lucrative solutions. This innovation elevates creative potential while supporting sustainability goals.

Why is the Demand for Solar-Powered Drones on the Rise?

Researchers fuel the progression of the drone industry, which is focused on making solar-powered drones. The industry has focused on designing innovative products that respond to the constantly growing market and customer demand for renewable energy solutions.

These companies resort to more than a few means, for example, product innovation, strategic alliances, and mergers and attainments, to guarantee a competitive advantage. In July 2024, Chinese researchers found the tiniest and lightest solar-powered drone, weighing more than 4 grams or 0.14 oz and 600 times lighter than any existing solar-powered micro aerial vehicle.

The drone's wingspan is 20cm, making it extremely light. In January 2024, Australian company Sphere Drones introduced its latest innovation, the HubX, a rugged and sturdy mobile platform for quick deployment. It has opened new horizons in its potential applications and can be created in only 30 minutes for use in farms, mines, or disaster areas.

Solar-powered Drones in the Indian Context

MARAAL is a solar-powered drone developed in India by IIT Kanpur. These multipurpose drones are mainly used for defence purposes.

Trial Period

Every flight test was conducted on an airstrip part of IIT Kanpur. The autopilot was put through its paces through the following flights, and its settings were tweaked to attain the best performance concerning path following and power consumption. The flight only took place during the day and involved a simulation of an earlier take-off.

The pilot was coached to climb at 0.05 metres per second after the drone was commanded to take off at 09:30 IST with depleted batteries. It was found that a velocity of 15 metres per second would offer the autopilot the ideal amount of command input for low-power flight.

All the power aspects of the drones were monitored. When the power generated was lower than what was required by the system, the throttle was cut off, and the pilot was coached to glide the aircraft while upholding a sink rate of 0.15 metres per second.

The produced power was used to charge the batteries during this time. The drone was stopped at a height of 100 metres, where it was taught to slow the descent rate while snowballing the throttle to fully charge the batteries before landing. The drone landed safely at 6 P.m. IST with a charged battery. It established an endurance of 8 hours and 30 minutes.

Present Status

Garuda Aerospace has developed a solar drone, SURAJ. It is an ISR high-altitude drone fashioned for surveillance operations, providing instantaneous info to the high command and protecting soldiers on the ground.

It was first presented at the Aero India 2023 convention in Bengaluru. It can carry payloads up to 10 kilograms, flies at 3,000 feet, and has a 12-hour flight time. Infinity is a solar-powered surveillance drone created by New Space Research and Technologies, partnering with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. It spies on enemies and can fly for 90 days at an altitude of 65,000 feet.

Nagpur-based Solar Industries made solar drones to carry explosives and launch remote attacks on targets. The Indian government proclaims that these are the nation’s first entirely home-based weaponized drones.
