Defining Drone Racing
Drone racing involves drone pilots contending with an obstacle course while flying along the course with a First-Person View. Pilots wear FPV goggles and see what their drone sees and guide it accordingly. This whole exercise takes place in real time, giving the pilots a feel of actual flying as they propel their drone along the course.
India Taking Giant Steps in Drone Racing
The Indian Drone Racing League, a startup initiated in 2016 organized the 90th Indian Drone Racing League in April 2022 in the capital city of New Delhi, presenting an opportunity for drone enthusiasts to showcase their skills. Currently, there are more than 4000 drone enthusiasts registered with IDRL.
As per the founder of the IDRL, the drone racing competition is not just entertaining but also educational. The drone pilots are instructed on robotics and build the hardware and software.
Colleges Making a Move On
Colleges want to host IDRL at their premises, and these competitions have prize money for inspiring drone enthusiasts to participate actively. The drone racing competition was sponsored by the I-Hub Foundation for Cobotics, the Technology Innovation Hub of IIT Delhi. With 15 pilots from Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Pondicherry, and even Nepal, the drone league also had an audience of 300 plus students.
